Research Paradigms in Education Qualitative Research



Research Paradigms

 The research paradigm is a method, model or pattern for conducting research.

It is a set of ideas, beliefs or understanding within which theories and practices can function.

 Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is very important in educational research

It addresses the" how and why" research question and enables deeper understanding of experience, phenomena

Characteristics Of Qualitative Research

  • Multiple sources of data

  • Natural setting

  • Inductive data analysis

  • Research as key instrument

  • Soft and anecdotal

  • Idealistic/relativist/constructivist

  • Explore topic


Types Of Qualitative Research

Case Study: Research conduct in- depth investigation into an individual, group, event or community typically gathering data, through observation and interviews.

 Focus Group: A moderator (or research) guide conversion around a specific topic among a group of participants.

 Ethnyograph:  Researchers interact with and observe a specific societal or ethnic group

In their real life environment.

 Grounded Theory: To understand the social and psychological processes that characterize an       event or situation.

Interviews:  Researcher ask participants question to learn about their perspective.


Advantages of Qualitative Research

  • It become possible to understand attitude.

  • It save money

  • It is open ended in nature

  • Result in detailed form

  • It is flexible


Disadvantage of Qualitative Research

  • No statistical representation

  • Time consuming

  • It has no rigidity

  • Create data that is difficult to presents
